Antonyms Instruction: Questions 1-3 consist of words in capital letters followed by four options. Choose the word that is most nearly opposite in meaning to the word in capital letters. Then, blacken the letter of your choice on the separate answer sheet provided.
- 1.DESTITUTE
- A. wealthy
- B. prostitute
- C. generous
- D. healthy
Answer: A. This question tests the opposite meaning of “destitute,” which means having very little or no money. “Wealthy” means having a lot of money, so it is the opposite. A prostitute is unrelated in meaning; generous means willing to give; healthy describes good health, not wealth. - 2.NIECE
- A. cousin
- B. nephew
- C. nice
- D. aunt
Answer: B. This question tests the opposite meaning of “niece.” A niece is a female child of your brother or sister, while a nephew is a male child of your brother or sister. A cousin is a different family relation; “nice” sounds similar but has a different meaning; an aunt is not the opposite of a niece. - 3.REFUTE
- A. rebut
- B. disprove
- C. confirm
- D. deny
Answer: C. This question tests the opposite meaning of “refute,” which means to show that a claim is false. “Confirm” means to show that a claim is true, so it is the opposite. Rebut means to argue against a claim; disprove means to show it is false; deny means to say it is not true.
Reading Comprehension Instruction: Read the following passages carefully and answer questions 4-8. Each question is based on the information stated or implied in the passage. Then, blacken the letter of your choice on the separate answer sheet provided. Passage II New situations always make me a bit nervous, and my first swimming class was no exception. After I changed into my bathing suit in the locker room, I stood timidly by the side of the pool waiting for the teacher and the other students to show up. After a couple of minutes the teacher came over. She smiled and introduced herself, and two more students joined us. Although they were both older than me, they didn’t seem to be embarrassed about not knowing how to swim. I began to feel more at ease. We got into the pool, and teacher had us put on brightly colored water wings to help us stay afloat. One of the other students, May, had already taken the beginning class once before, so she took a kickboard and went splashing off by herself. The other student, Jerry, and I were told to hold on to the side of the pool and shown how to kick for the breaststroke. One by one, the teacher had us hold on to a kickboard while she pulled it through the water, and we kicked. Source: Jonan Donaldson Academic Writing January 12th, 2010
- 4.The word timidly in paragraph 1, line 2 is synonymous with:
- A. nervously
- B. angrily
- C. timely
- D. bravely
Answer: A. The question tests the meaning of a word by using its context. Timidly means nervously, and the passage describes the speaker waiting by the pool with uncertainty. Angrily means with anger, which does not fit. Timely means at the right time, not nervously. Bravely means showing courage, unlike the speaker’s timid feeling.
Analytical and Logical Reasoning Questions Instruction: Questions 9 to 16 deal with logical and analytical reasoning. Read the given set of conditions and assumptions for each question. Choose the answer that you think is most appropriate among the given alternatives. Then, blacken the letter of your choice on the separate answer sheet provided.
- 5.Father : How was your exam yesterday? Son : I got zero out of twenty? Father : Bravo! What can we conclude from this conversation between father and son?
- A. The father was sarcastic and disappointed with his son.
- B. The father was humorous and he rejoiced at his son's result.
- C. The son was happy with his result.
- D. The father was honestly pleased with his son.
Answer: A. The key idea is that a spoken reply can mean the opposite of its words when used sarcastically. Saying “Bravo!” after hearing about a score of zero shows the father is mocking the result and is disappointed. B is wrong because the father is not truly rejoicing; C is wrong because the son does not say he is happy; D is wrong because the father’s praise is not sincere. - 6.An assassinee is an important person killed by someone; whereas, a martyr is any person killed because of their political beliefs. Abbune was killed on the cause of freedom, whereas, President Safi was shot dead in broad light. From this we can conclude that:
- A. When Abbune is an assassinee, Safi is a martyr.
- B. Both Safi and Abbune are assassinees.
- C. When Saji is an assassinee, Abbune is a martyr.
- D. Both Saji and Abbune are martyrs.
